Fink's gfortran is provided by the gcc44 package.  We don't support
third-party gfortrans (or third-party installs of most anything else,
for that matter), and in fact, even having one on your system under
/usr/local may wind up causing packages not to build--we've had a number
of reports over the years about problems due to third-party compilers.

Also, what package are you installing?  If it's something that _should_
use gfortran, there may be a missing dependency.  On the other hand,
configure scripts for packages often check for gfortran whether the
package needs it or not--copying and pasting stock scripts, I'd guess.
