Well, that version of mc (4.7.0.3-1) has been in unstable CVS since 8 March 
2010 (largely based on an updated .info file Edward Rudd sent me back then). 
But even before that, I never was able to reproduce the issues you reported, so 
maybe it was indeed some ncurses update.
