I just did:
fink install fcc44
and left the machine overnight - all that bootstrapping takes a while to do.

$ cd /sw/bin
$ ls -lsa gcc*
8 lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  admin  30 16 Aug 03:19 gcc-4 -> 
/sw/lib/gcc4.4/bin/gcc-fsf-4.4
