Normal.  Index doesn't return anything.  You normally don't even need to
run it.

The Binary menu isn't going to do much for you, since there isn't an
official binary distribution on 10.6.  There is an unofficial one that I
know of, and you could potentially set it up.

You need to use the source operations. And if you're just starting out,
"source selfupdate-rsync" would be the best way to go.
