It seems that FinkCommander expects the Fink installation to be in one of what it considers "standard" locations, like /sw (or /fink, or ~/fink, or /opt, or /usr/local, or several other really weird things). Your choice /sw5 is not among them. I would call this a bug in FinkCommander: It should allow any path, as soon as it contains a valid Fink installation. This looks to me not like a conscious decision, but more like a programming error (file FinkUtilities.m, function findFinkBasePath), where oldBasePath has been forgotten to be included as the first component in a search list. You can work around this by making a symlink from one of the standard locations to your Fink base directory, for example ln -s /sw5 ~/fink Another point to consider is that setting the Fink path in the "Paths" tab of the Preferences is not enough.
