So the latest update is that rpy2 still doesnt install - says gcc failed. phase: compiling. Based on Alex's suggestions, it appears that my gcc versions are still Apple's and not gcc45. In fact when I run /sw/bin/gcc45 i get a Command Not Found error. Could this be the problem?

Alex in answer to your questions:

/usr/bin/cc --version
powerpc-apple-darwin9-gcc-4.0.1 (GCC) 4.0.1 (Apple Inc. build 5493)

/usr/bin/gcc --version
powerpc-apple-darwin9-gcc-4.0.1 (GCC) 4.0.1 (Apple Inc. build 5493)

/usr/bin/c++ --version
powerpc-apple-darwin9-g++-4.0.1 (GCC) 4.0.1 (Apple Inc. build 5493)

/usr/bin/g++ --version
powerpc-apple-darwin9-g++-4.0.1 (GCC) 4.0.1 (Apple Inc. build 5493)

I reinstalled gcc and am trying to reinstall rpy2. I will keep the list updated if this works or not.

One possibility for this sort of error to occur on a G4 is if you're
using a third-party compiler that was built on a G5.

What do you get from

/usr/bin/cc --version
/usr/bin/gcc --version
/usr/bin/c++ --version
/usr/bin/g++ --version

?
