I am trying to install pdftex, xcircuit, imagemagick... on a Mac 10.6.8 using
fink and/or apt-get. But the different packages require different versions of
ghostscript. But when I update ghostscript, i lose packages that required
another version. What can I do? (BTW, is there a search function for the
archives?)

For instance, install tex:

> fink install pdftex

Fink isn't sure how to install the above packages safely. You may be able to
 fix things by running:

   fink scanpackages
   sudo apt-get update
   sudo apt-get install ghostscript-nox=7.04-3

Failed: Fink::SysState: Could not resolve inconsistent dependencies

(So I follow the directions and it is fine:)

> which pdftex
 /sw/bin//pdftex

(Now, install imagemagick or xcircuit:)

> fink install imagemagick

Fink isn't sure how to install the above packages safely. You may be able to
 fix things by running:

   fink scanpackages
   sudo apt-get update
   sudo apt-get install ghostscript=8.61-5

Failed: Fink::SysState: Could not resolve inconsistent dependencies

(Follow directions, and imagemagick instals, but pdftex is gone:)

884 ~> which convert
 /sw/bin//convert
885 ~> which pdftex
886 ~> which pdf*tex
887 ~> which *tex
888 ~>

And, it does not matter whether i use fink or apt-get. What can I do to install
each of these packages?

Thanks very much,
Mike
