I am completely lost - I want to install Octave and Gnuplot on a 10.6.8
Mac. I have tried installing octave and gnuplot directly, I have tried
dselect, FinkCommander, and apt-get. All to no avail.
I have installed Octave and gnuplot before getting Fink, but I get
"warning: broken pipe -- some output may be lost”. Octave finds gnuplot
but won’t plot.
So, I tried Fink:
Installing fink was straightforward, but I figure out how to use it to
install Octace and gnuplot. I first tried dselect (because it was the
first suggestion in http://www.finkproject.org/doc/users-guide/index.php
When I ran dselect (or sudo dselect) I get a list of packages, but could
not find either octave, gnuplot or the sci directory where they are
supposed to be. See “Appendix A)” below for details.
One of the messages in this mailing list, and the responses thereto,
suggested that dselect was hard to use. So, I tried FinkCommander next.
The first four or five times I tried FinkCommander, it told me that my
package database was corrupted and suggested running “fink index -f” even
after I ran "fink index f”. See Appendix B) below for details.
Now (only a few hours later) FinkCommander works better but I can’t find
octave, gnuplot or sci in FinkCommander either. (They are supported by
Fink see http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/package.php/octave and
http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/package.php/gnuplot )
Appendix A) - the packages listed by dselect:

The line you have highlighted represents many packages; if you ask to
install, remove, hold, &c it you will affect all
the packages which match the criterion shown.
If you move the highlight to a line for a particular package you will see
information about that package displayed
here. You can use `o' and `O' to change the sort order and give yourself
the opportunity to mark packages in different
kinds of groups.
