It's usually good to post the results of "fink -V | head -n 3" because
that often gives us a quick indicator of problems.

What do you mean by "the update command"?  Did you run either "fink
selfupdate-rsync" or "fink selfupdate-cvs" after installing Fink?  If
you didn't then you won't have anything but the minimal base packages.
