Didn't realise that. I was using it in ignorant desperation (somebody in 
a post I found said it has resolved a buildlock issue).

I had actually rsynced the sw/ across from the external drive to the new 
laptop, which ought to preserve permission. Stupidly, however, I had 
initially just drag&dropped the folder across to the drive from the old 
laptop, so permissions probably got lost anyway in this first transfer.

My old laptop with the "pure" sw/ is at work, I will transfer the folder 
tomorrow to the new machine using rsync and hopefully all will be fine.
