I believe I had an issue with this version of the installer at one point in
which it worked _once_ on my machine when the permissions for / were 755,
but for future attempts at an install they had to be 775.

Try using "sudo chmod 775 /" and see if the installer works.  If not, then
I'd recommend using one of the source install options, since they're less
picky about permissions and the like:

Once you're done, however you do it, assuming you'd like to get current
versions of the packages, you should use "fink selfupdate-cvs" to set that
up.  You can then use "fink selfupdate-rsync" to switch over to rsync if
you'd like--there is a bug in the Fink-0.9.0 point release in which rsync
updates don't work properly.
