Hm. "tornado" didn't install "passwd-games"--it was already installed. Checking timestamps let me identify that it was installed as a dependency of "alienblaster" a week ago. That package is set to root/admin, and it runs normally. And I don't recall seeing that massage during that install. Here's what I get with "fink reinstall passwd-games": == Setting up passwd-games (20131113-1) ... 'games' user exists, with parameters: uid=603(games) gid=20(staff) groups=20(staff),12(everyone),61(localaccounts),502(boinc_master),503(boinc_project),402(com.apple.sharepoint.group.1),403(com.apple.sharepoint.group.2),100(_lpoperator) Fink will use these settings. 'games' group exists, with parameters: AppleMetaNodeLocation: /Local/Default GeneratedUID: AA6948D1-48F3-4863-B3B5-F10D5C10AAEC GroupMembership: games Password: * PrimaryGroupID: 20 RecordName: games RecordType: dsRecTypeStandard:Groups Fink will use these settings. Using existing entry for 'games' user/group. == And it still says I don't have permission. It's not a big deal if I can't run it--I was installing it just out of curiosity--but it's now become a confounding mystery, and I can't stand to leave a mystery unsolved without at least trying. :-) And I'm learning things that will likely be useful later. On a whim, I just tried a few things with alienblaster. Trying to save settings returned the error message: "Options::saveFile(): error while opening file /sw/etc/alienblaster/cfg/alienBlaster.cfg". That file is also owned by games/games. So it looks like there's something screwy with the settings for the games user and/or group, but I've not a clue what. Is there any significance to the fact that this shows "staff" and "games" groups both with id 20? Should I delete games/games and reinstall passwd-games again? Mark D.
