When I upgraded a few months ago, I tried to use that method but ran
into an issue that, at the time, I didn't understand what was causing
it: some of the packages came up as "not found" and caused the entire
process to abort.

It turns out that the packages in question are ones that I had installed
under 10.8 which are not in the distribution for 10.9 and so could not
be installed. It would probably be a good idea to add something about
that to the upgrade page, so that beginners like me have an idea of how
to proceed if that happens.
