Thanks, Alexander, for the quick reply.
I had launched xmgrace from the normal terminal, and Xquartz was not 
crashing ... only xmgrace.

In the meantime, I have "solved" the issue in the hard way: I installed 
the old xcode 5.0.2 and command line tools (osx mavericks late october 
2013 version). With this older software, all the packages compile fine 
and xmgrace is stable.
