I followed the directions (which is tricky since they keep on
branching) and was then able to install xfig and it runs beautifully. 
That was going from a 2006 version to 2013.

By the way, in your instructions you give a command that wipes out the
/sw directory.  Instead of doing that, I moved it to /tmp (using
sudo).  That way I could go back to the old version since it did have
a running version of xfig.

The version in /tmp didn't interfere and next time I reboot the files
will go away.

I recommend changing your instructions to mv instead of rm.  In
general I don't delete files, I just throw them in /tmp for safety.
