Okay, I'm not sure what happened, but after I went poking around in things,
the only thing not working is startx. All other commands I've tried,
including pymol, are doing what they're supposed to. However, other X11
commands were also not working so I don't think the problem was pymol.

This solves my immediate problem, so I'm good to continue figuring out fink
and fixing it at a slower pace. But if you want to know what startx is
doing, if I start it without XQuartz already running, I get

and then it hangs.

If I run startx with XQuartz already running, I get

and it just continues making those two-dot lines.

I can also try to give a more precise description of "went poking around in
things." (I should also note that fink is my first foray back into tools I
used a long time ago, so I may be doing something that in retrospect will
have been really silly.)
