I think I have things working now. The distinctions between octave, octave382
and 'sudo apt-get install octave382-dev=3.8.2-4 octave382=3.8.2-4' (recommended
by fink when it 'Could not resolve inconsistent dependencies!' were lost on
this newbie, but I seem to have muddled through.
