Thanks for the quick response, but no, I have no .xinitrc file in my home 
directory...there may be one lurking somewhere else, but I haven't found it.  
By the way, now that I have things working with XQuartz 2.7.5 I am afraid to 
reboot, thinking that I will be back to square one.  I'll let you know if I get 
the courage to do that, meanwhile I'll get a little work done before taking the 
chance.

If you are using a .xinitrc file, try getting rid of it.
