Thanks. Virtualization was pretty much where I thought I'd probably end up but it's less than ideal; the target Macbook is a 2007 model with 2gb RAM (and is on loan so no replacing OSX). I'm going to have to put some thought into setting up something as lightweight as possible rather than dropping a full Mint Desktop install into VirtualBox/VMWare (which I have on my Windows desktop mostly as a web dev sandbox).
