I don't know how dissimilar the librarys linked are and whether they're updated much...
But, here's me suggesting something to try -- if it works great..if not, you wasted a few minutes.
My idea is find the 4.6 binary and rename it as 4.6 eg gnuplot4.6
Then update to 5.0..
Then try invoking the 4.6 binary explicitly

Ok..lets see if that works.

Not both running at the same time! Either 4.6, or 5.0. Since I know that there are differences between 4.6 and 5.0, before upgrading I want to be sure that my 4.6 scripts are (nearly) compatible with 5.0..

This isn’t currently possible.  Do you need to have both running at the same time or something?
