I get the same error when launching mplayer as well. The error occurs regardless whether one tries to run mplayer in the background:

I do not have an Apple Remote. If mplayer is looking for a hardware remote, it’s going to keep failing because I don’t have one. Can mplayer be built w/o Apple Remote support, or is there a flag to specify no remote?
