Hanspeter, I stand corrected. the lack of Apple Remote is not fatal. It turns out Mplayer was tripping on an unknown or at least unspecified file type. Mplayer plays the video fine so long as the file name includes the file type. So far, I’ve been able to play both .avi and .mp4 files.
By the way, I’m launching Mplayer from Apple’s terminal.app. It works fine, although the output is verbose. As the movie plays, I get output in the terminal window like this: Fallingback to pbuffer.
