I specifically wrote I am strongly opposed to making it essential. 
The simplest and strongest reason against it simply is: it is not 
essential.
The fewer packages are in essential, the better. If you look, the 
only things in there are fink&base-files; some debian tools; and some 
tools required to unpack source archives.

Man OTOH is in no way mission critical.

I know, and I consider it a shortcoming of theirs, a bad design 
decision, that is still being carried one, because "everybody has 
it". Which IMHO is no good reason to keep using it.


Oh well, I don't want to start a war on this, but I do feel quite 
strongly about it.
