Indeed, it makes perfect sense and would fully explain the problems we see.

Uhm, I have always compiled XFree86 myself and indeed, the one in the 
current distro is compiled on OS X 10.1. The difference is that the 
4.2.0 series is using the two-level namespace, while the previous 
versions used -flat_namespace together with -undefined suppress.
