I am blunt now: You should be clever enough at not doing what you did! Unix tools are in general meant for users who know what they do, like it or not. I know this is somewhat opposite to the MacOS angle at things, but so is Unix in general :) If you say "rm /" it will warn you, but if you give it the "-f" option (and if you have the proper access rights), it will just delete your whole HD, and not warn you. "-f" means "force", and if you specify it and didn't mean it, well, tough luck. There is really no way for dpkg to second guess what you *meant*. And any attempts of it to do so would certainly cause far more pain than they would help.
