If you've had esound installed since OS X 10.0 days, the problem might be that your esound was linked to an old version of the system library. Try running "otool -L /sw/lib/libesd.dylib" and if the last line of the output tells you that libSystem.B.dylib has current version 50.0.0, then you are linked to the old version. In that case, try "fink rebuild esound" and see if that fixes the problem.
