checksums are a worthy goal as well. How does debian do it?

Something like:

SourceN-MD5: 16445e2a10aa48a0fda36868270ef5c2

should do the trick for Fink.

Of course i suppose we'd have to update every package, but that 
should be easily scriptable.

Hmm, i don't see a feature request for this... is there a reason not?
