To understand the complete story in the example Ben gave, you also need to
look at tcltk-8.3.3-7.info, which is the other package that wants to
install man3/Object.3 .

To implement this update-alternatives strategy, the maintainers of all of
the packages which contain the conflicting files have to cooperate, and
all use the update-alternatives.  Since gc is my package, I would have
been happy to do this for the gc vs. graphviz conflict.

However, when I look at my gc package more closely, I believe I installed
the man page in the wrong place.  I have now changed this in a new version
of the gc package, which should no longer conflict with graphviz.

So the fix for graphviz is to add:
  Conflicts: gc (<= 6.0-3)
  Replaces: gc (<= 6.0-3)
Would you like me to add those lines to graphviz for you?  (It will mean
a new version of graphviz.)
