I had the same problem, I found many mirrors with alltheweb.com's
ftp-search (searching for giflib-4.1.0.tar.gz). Downloading the file
and placing it in /sw/src worked fine for me.
Similar problem with samba, they had a new release (2.2.4), so the
version Fink wants (2.2.3a) is moved in a sub-directory on the server
named old-versions.
Perhaps Fink should mirror all source files (like Debian does), so
you can always get the right version from a known place.
And a third problem with downloading: prdownloads.sourceforge.net
sends on all request a html file so select the nearest mirror (expie-
rienced with netpbm, freetype and libpng). I had to download them
manually.
