the faq says:
http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-fink.php#unstable
If you only want one or two specific packages, it is safer to copy those .info files (and their associated .patch files, if there are any) from /sw/fink/dists/unstable/main/finkinfo to /sw/fink/dists/local/main/finkinfo.
Do you agree with this? I don't. I think we should remove that from the faq and tell people to just enable the unstable tree. Moving stuff to local can cause a number of problems and support issues.

I have some sympathy with the support argument, but I think the FAQ statement should be kept.
Most users should be kept on the stable tree for as much of their stuff as possible.
If a user just simply must have the latest version of a package (e.g. for a specific feature) or wants a new package that has only just appeared in unstable then copying a few .info/.patch seems preferable to going 'completely unstable'. The user knows that they have deliberately configured something that is in alpha state, and should really accept the consequences for using that package.
Perhaps the FAQ statement should stay, but with more caveats?
