Another clue might be the extract from the listing of the installer's pax fileI can provide one more clue about this situation: I made the binary installer for 0.4.1, and my user id is 2011. I'm not at all clear how the permissions on your system could have been changed, however.
drwx------ 3 2011 staff 0 Sep 22 22:57 .
drwxr-xr-x 11 2011 staff 0 Sep 22 21:00 ./sw
drwxr-xr-x 80 2011 staff 0 Sep 22 21:21 ./sw/bin
and so on. It seems these permissions get transferred during installation. In particular the permissions 700 for ".", which translates into "/", are deadly for the machine. No reboot possible.
I don't know anything about this installer, I only see a line
OverwritePermissions NO
in the Fink\ 0.4.1\ Installer.info file. But this doesn't seem to be respected in all cases.
Maybe one should advise to run Apple's "Repair Disk Permissions" program from the "Disk Utility" application immediately after running the binary installer?
