Hello fink developers.

I would like to introduce myself. After talking to fingolfin about the current status of the fink documentation we decided, that it might be good to put someone in charge of maintaining and acquiring more documentation. I offered him to put myself up for the job of a fink documentation manager and that is what he accepted me to do.

There are various issues which need to be tackled and I would be very grateful if all of you tried to put documentation onto your task list and give it just as much time as you spend with packaging or coding for fink. I will try to supply documentation by myself, but I will rely on you to verify it and to help me expand what we can offer through finks documentation. The XML and DTD can surely be enhanced, but for that to happen we will need more documentation.

I am looking into more and better user documentation, documentation of the various files fink provides, such as fink.conf, init.c/sh and the many helper scripts. each package should have a little bit of documentation, what was done, so that it now can be part of fink and where it might be handy to use. When someone ports a package there is surely a reason behind it and it would not be bad if more people than only the porting one knew about it.

Fink is a great project, I will try to devote much time to it, that does not mean, that I will be writing documentation _for you_. All of you will have to start writing documentation, I shall be here to help you, keep track of changes and make sure that everything is kept in an orderly manner. If you want me to write documentation or at least find someone to do it, then please also supply the necessary information.

It would be very helpful if significant changes to the core packages are reported to me as well. Even though I will read the fink-devel mailing list, it would be more than helpful if you dropped me a little one now then telling me that some CL option changed or some function was added to this and that.

Localisation , translation and more, building a website for fink documentation, building cross references and even better package documentation will be a feature to look into for the future. I attached part of the fink.conf documentation I am writing currently it is NOT spell checked nor it is grammar checked, so PLEASE DO NOT bother with those issues. Just tell me if the context is correct so far. That would help me immensely. I am looking forward to working with all of you, because I think fink deserves what we are about to create.
