Collecting money from people on the basis that it might come in useful someday is not a good idea. Once we start with money we will have to bring in the same amount as we are spending, we'd probably have spending committments for recurring costs, and we'd be screwed if those costs were not covered by donations.

Well I cannot follow you here. Money which rests on an entrusted funds account does not do us bad nor good, it is simply there. No one is asking people actively for money, some seem to be in a position where they simply _wish_ to donate money. I think I am old enough and well experienced enough to be entrusted with such a matter. I know that sounds somewhat overbearing but it is the truth as I feel it.

I do not see, where we would see any reoccurring fees from, none of us is going to sign up for any services and the money collected shall only be used for one time fees, such as acquiring new hardware.

If you have proposals as to how such funds should be used, and can cost these ideas, then we can start the discussion about collecting money.
I think my proposals very pretty specific. Max seems to have agreed to our own server which serves simply as a backup to the fink distribution system. AGAIN, NO one wants to move from sourceforge, rand-irc and I simply feel it is good to have an independent backup and for me it would be easier to get some things done for the documentation.

For that rand-irc needs a new Server, which costs money, which could easily be paid from funds.

I personally do not see an absolute need to collect money from users at this point in time.

I never said that there is an absolute need, I am simply trying to satisfy the users wishes, not I decided that it would be nice to donate to Fink, someone did and asked me about it in private as well. I am merely trying to satisfy a demand that has been there before I even thought about it in much detail.

Hope that clarifies it a bit :)
