Okay, my $0.02 as a user:

The model for this exists somewhat already--fink.config. Just as I add the unstable trees, why can I not select ALL my global fink install options in that file or even turn them on or off temporarily for a particular install such as Qt or Kde3 if I know I am going away from the system for a while, doing it overnight, or installing on my Dual-SMP G4 desktop as opposed to my G4 TiBook? If people have problems as Randal suggested might happen (and I believe his advice is worth listening to BTW), then they can turn them off--either per job or globally. I submit that his is consistent with the fink paradigm now. For example: if someone has problems with builds today, it is often suggested to add the unstable tree as long as they desire the application or library more than stability of the stable tree software. Why is this so hard? Then you can all eat cake and still have it your way (not to mix metaphors or anything ;-)
