I think it is a sensible discussion. I think the focus on how people are using fink is important, although I think we are all talking about the bit of that elephant that we see. It seems to me that there is a lot of value in fink update-all - something that for .apps I only get if they have figured out how to work with software update... Where there are dependencies that a lot of the fink target software uses, it makes sense to have a system package, like for Xfree86, and it would be nice to have something that could handle updates and so on. But I don't think it is necessarily part of the basic fink development. (Someone can of course do the coding, get heaps of users, and prove us nay-sayers wrong...)
