Fink has borrowed from Debian something called the "alternatives" system. If there are two packages which want to install files with the same name, both of them can use the alternatives system, which allows the two files to coexist on the system and allows the user to select which one of the files will get used.
I'm not sure if this is properly documented in Fink. For an example, you can compare the packages lesstif and openmotif3.
