Here's a strategy for fixing the libpng vs. libpng3 problem in the stable tree. I've created packages in the unstable tree which update every stable package which depends on libpng (except for the KDE packages, which I haven't finished yet).
I propose to move them all at the same time, next week some time. I append a list of the packages which I will move to stable. Please look them over, in case there are any which need further attention before the move.
