My take on this (other please correct/supplement me):
We are not really competing with them, rather we are working together or complementing; of course there is overlap, but there is no hostile atmosphere between the projects, to the contrary, the relations are friendly and good.
Also several people are both contribution to Fink and Opendarwin; e.g. Benjamin Reeds is doing the KDE packages for both, and Peter is working on both, too, and so are others.
Darwinports/Opendarwin makes use of patches we made; we have discussed on collaborating in the work on a new depenency engine etc.
Also, opendarwin is not replacing fink, at least not in the near future. And no they are not "giving us a hard time" because that would assume we compete, which we don't.
I'm not that sure myself. Maybe that's why Alexander writes most of the FAQ... :)
