Hi Max. There are really two issues here: 1) how do we ensure that our users are using the gcc version we expect? 2) how do we transition from gcc 3.1 to gcc 3.3?
I agree that we could do a much better job with #1 than we have in the past. However, at the moment I'm more concerned about #2. You seemed to suggest that a given Fink installation should have a "gcc" property which indicates how it was compiled. What does this imply for our binary distribution? Do we now distribute two kinds of binaries, one made with gcc 3.1 and one made with gcc 3.3?
