It sounds like it's actually gtk+2 (via pango1) that's causing your
problem--there were some changes between XFree86 4.2 -> 4.3 that caused some
problems.  You'll want to:

1) Update your package descriptions with "fink selfupdate-cvs"
2) install pango1-xft2
3) update gtk2+ (rebuild it if a newer version isn't available)

When I upgraded from 4.2.x to 4.3 xfree86 on my beige g3/300 revision 2 
with jaguar server some interactions got faster and the memory usage 
went down but now there seems a glitch that occurs somewhat randomly 
with text that's rendered by gtk.  For example, I have the 0.64-1 of 
gaim installed and when I go to the "Tools" menu, then "Away" and run 
my mouse up and down the possible selections the text gets corrupted 
(see figure 1).
