It sounds like it's actually gtk+2 (via pango1) that's causing your problem--there were some changes between XFree86 4.2 -> 4.3 that caused some problems. You'll want to:
1) Update your package descriptions with "fink selfupdate-cvs" 2) install pango1-xft2 3) update gtk2+ (rebuild it if a newer version isn't available) Alexander K.
