Installing system-xfree86-43, I get the line
- XFree86 version: /usr/X11R6/man/man1/bdftruncate.1:.TH bdftruncate 1 Version\ 4.3.99.10 XFree86 XFree86
This "Version\ " outsmarts your perl replace script.
I've checked a modified version into my exp tree, let me know if it works for you, and I'll put them in unstable.
