At this point I think it would be useful to consider _why_ user-mode fink is important and _what_ it's supposed to accomplish.
Actually *at this point*, the most important consideration in getting user-mode fink adopted is to do it later. =)
Max has been too busy to do much with fink other than going through his packages to make sure they're up to date, and David Morrison and I are both forehead-deep in gcc3.3 and Panther. We've got 2 weeks until Panther's released, and we still have a buttload of work to do. All of the recent changes to fink have been either related to making that happen, or to reduce headaches so we can concentrate on doing so.
User-mode fink is useful to a very small part of the fink population, and adds headaches. I'm not against it, but I'm not for it without giving it a lot of thought first. If you find a good way to implement it that doesn't cause problems, great, but I can tell you now that even if it's perfect, no one's got time to dig into it until probably a month from now. =)

If we didn't, we would have made something else be the default. So keep your cotton-pickin' hands off our defaults. Don't touch. Consider them mandatory. "Mandatory defaults" has a nice ring to it.
