I don't think there is an easy solution--it's most likely buried deep in the guts of the source code. Fink's official position right now is to avoid paths with spaces in them (at least for the main Fink tree--it's in the FAQ). There are plenty of other packages that are space-intolerant. Go ahead and submit it, and if something comes up you can issue a revision.
