Martin Costabel suggested to me that a kext may be to blame for the mv trailing slashes bug.
In my system preferences, the only "haxie" I have is Stuffit Archive Via Rename aka Stuffit AVR. It is part of Stuffit Deluxe 8.0. It allows one to stuff a file by adding .sit, .tar, .zip, etc. or unstuff by removing the suffix. The only interface in System Preferences consists of a single button that toggles between Start and Stop. Stopping it reproducibly allows mv to work properly.
That shouldn't be touching the kernel. It should be using a system similar to APE, which only affects GUI applications. If it doesn't, I'd call it a bug.
Googling a little, one can see that this Stuffit AVR kext is indeed changing the kernel's "rename" function. It has been denounced as buggy for quite a while, see for ex. http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum13&Number=540129&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1
Aladdin are saying on their web site that they will have an updated version of the kext "within weeks". That was early October.
I am not sure if they are aware of the trailing slash bug they introduced.
I think there should be a warning on the Fink web page that users of Stuffit deluxe 8 should uninstall this kext.
