If you want to test this, you could move this remporarily out of the way so that /usr/bin/rsync is used and look if the selfupdate works differently then.
Otherwise I will have to leave this problem to the rsync buffs (bbraun?), because the syntax of the selfupdate-rsync command has become so complicated that I don't know whether the --delete-after can still do what it is supposed to do.
