There may be something wrong with your "cp" command. Do you have the fink fileutils installed? If yes, you could try to move /sw/bin/cp temporarily out of the way, so that /bin/cp is used, and see if this changes something.
But it is not clear to me how "Invalid argument" can appear.
This is so weird that I am suspecting something as sinister as the Stuffit Pro 8.0.1 kext. You don't have this installed, by chance?
