The difference would be that $(PWD) will insert the PWD variable
or PWD envar known to Make, while $$PWD will defer that to the
shell as $PWD. You'd see the difference in:
cd /etc; echo $(PWD)
vs
cd /etc; echo $$PWD
Which one is right? Depends on what you needed it for.
