Good morning.
While I should probably simply be quiet and do "my thing" I cannot help but say what is on my mind. I have to agree with Justin and I have to agree with the way he did it. I do not think that branches are the answer in our case where a single person drives development forward. It might be that he did not put as much thought into his changes as you did Max, but I am sure that he did evaluate what he is and was doing. A branch only makes sense in my humble opinion when you know that there are a few people who will drive development until that code base is stable enough so that it can be merged back into head.
He at least tried to tackle a subject which has been avoided by all the developer in the past, the dependencies engine and even though you welcomed him for doing that it also shows that you are not quite comfortable with it because he seems to take a different approach. While I can completely understand that I can also see that Justins actions finally brought back some life into the whole discussion and thus it was good that it happened and how it happened.
Trial and Error is sometimes not a method you need to necessarily avoid and to be honest I feel that we are far from true trial and error with the excellent coding you guys have shown the past couple of months. Thinking about an approach, carefully designing it and then implementing it is a very valuable approach, yet it does not nearly guarantee that everything works out of the box. Justin has never broken HEAD for more than 8 hours as far as I can remember, which is more than reasonable.
I would like to see more development from your side Justin no matter what has been said in this discussion and I would like to see the UID/GID Branch merged. There are many packages I wont be porting (INN being one of them) because they need their own UID/GID and I am not willing to mess with the passwd package.
If you tell me what to do, I will be the first to help you merge this back into a HEAD version which we can then test and see if it still works as advertised. Then you could update your branch, we tag it and release it so people can help testing after it has been properly announced on the web-site. Once they have given proper feedback it'll get merged into real HEAD and we are done with this.
No matter how it is done, as long as it works and does not imply problems in the future it should be added to the main code base.
Thanks
