it appears that somehow fink is not showing the Provides: of virtuals as being installed.
For example, fink-virtual-pkgs has:
---(snip!)--- Package: system-perl Status: install ok installed Version: 5.8.1-1 description: [virtual package representing perl] provides: perl581-core ---(snip!)---
...but 'fink list' shows this (excuse the word wrap):
---(snip!)--- dhcp-164:~ ranger$ fink list system-perl perl581-core Reading package info...
Fink has detected that your package cache is out of date and needs an
update, but does not have privileges to modify it. Please re-run fink as
root, for example with a "fink index" command.

perl581-core [virtual package]
i system-perl 5.8.1-1 [virtual package representing perl]
system-perl561 5.6.1-2 Placeholder package for manually installed perl 5.6.1
system-perl580 5.8.0-1 Placeholder package for manually installed perl 5.8.0
system-perl581 5.8.1-1 Placeholder package for manually installed perl 5.8.1

"perl581-core" doesn't show as installed. It's unclear whether this is why apt is asking for deps it doesn't need, but it seems a little strange.
Any ideas?
