There are a number of libraries that are newer than the versions in XFree86 4.3, so once you go forward, you can't go back.
Hmm, where is that shlibs branch? Just saying "you can't go back" is not really good enough, we should be putting in a versioned depends automatically in the .deb for packages which are built using 4.4. But, for now, there is probably no other way than saying "don't go back" :(
OTOH, this is a problem we have been ignoring traditionally. I think the similarity between 4.4 and the 4.3.99.x versions we have had for a long time is far bigger than between 4.3.99.x and Apple's 4.3.0.
